When you’re looking for a new au pair for your family, one consideration are the rules in your country regarding the nationality of your au pair or nanny.

Every country has a list of an ‘Eligible countries of origin’ of au pairs. It gives you information about nationality possibilities for au pair visa application. This can help you with your decision when you’re choosing an au pair or nanny for your family’s childcare needs.

The information below is simply for an approximate idea. Obviously all individual circumstance; conditions and requirements etc are different. Therefore you need to check with local authorities all specific details that applies to you.

NEED AN AU PAIR IN AUSTRALIA?

HOST FAMILIES IN AUSTRALIA
In order to go to Australia under the Working Holiday Program, an au pair must be a national of one of the following countries: Belgium, Canada, Republic of Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan or the United Kingdom.
The Australian Work and Holiday Program is available for au pairs from the following countries: Bangladesh, Chile, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey and the USA.

NEED AN AU PAIR IN CANADA?

To hire a caregiver through the Live-in Caregiver Program, you must first try to fill your position with a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident or somebody who is already part of the Live-in Caregiver Program. If you wish to hire an au pair who doesn’t fit this category than the process is different. In both cases you need to check the specifics that apply to you, using the latest official government information.

NEED AN AU PAIR IN CHINA?

Although the requirement for Chinese visa largely remains the same across different Chinese Consulates, there are some special rules pertaining to each different Consulate. However your residence country possibly have additional requirements. Therefore you have to check on the official government website what applies to you.  

NEED AN AU PAIR IN AN EU COUNTRY?

HOST FAMILIES IN EU COUNTRIES: in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

European Union and EFTA countries’ citizens from all the EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and also Switzerland: no visa required for au pairs if she/he have a passport from any of these countries.  For au pairs from non-EU countries: the rules and requirements vary in different EU and EEA countries, therefore please check the official government website of the specific country you are interested in.

NEED AN AU PAIR IN NEW ZEALAND?

An pair or nanny is allowed to travel and work in New Zealand for up to 12 months, or 23 months if she/he is from the UK or Canada. If an au pair applies for a 23-month visa, he/she must provide a General Medical Certificate. There are different type of working holiday schemes for different countries and territories. NEED AN AU PAIR IN THE UNITED KINGDOM – UK?

The UK has left the EU. Gradual changes are expected due to Brexit. Therefore you need to follow the changes.
EU and EEA citizens and Switzerland: no visa is necessary currently. The UK Au Pair scheme comes under Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme. Nationals from the following countries are eligible to apply for visas under the scheme: Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Monaco, Taiwan, Republic of Korea and Hong Kong. NEED AN AU PAIR IN THE UNITED STATES – USA?

People from almost all countries can become au pairs in the United States. However, in order to legally become an au pair in the US it is necessary for an individual to obtain a J1 Visa. In addition, there are strict rules and list of requirements and limitations / exceptions. Please check details with the adequate authorities regarding your specific situation.
