Dear Host Family:
It is a pleasure to introduce myself. My name is Sharon Nikhol, and I am 25 years old from Cali, Colombia. In my city, something culturally representative is dance, especially salsa. My favorite foods from Cali are empanadas and arepas. Currently, I am part of a community where I am preparing to become an au pair. I have a team that helps me acquire new tools and skills to achieve my goal of traveling and living this enriching experience.

My childcare experience began in my teenage years, babysitting my younger cousins on weekends. Later on I became an au pair in the U.S from 2022 to 2024. I worked with two wonderful host families, one of them in Colorado and the other one in Atlanta, Georgia. In Colorado, I cared for a one-and-a-half-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl. We developed a very strong bond, engaging in activities such as dancing, singing, storytelling, and crafting. I also introduced them to Spanish through songs and daily interactions and they learned a lot from basic numbers to colors to basic words. In Georgia, I looked after a one-and-a-half-year-old boy and an eight-year-old girl, balancing responsibilities like school drop-offs, playtime, and helping the younger child adapt to daycare. I also prepared their meals and took them on outings to museums, parks, and the zoo. I learned a lot from interacting with the children, we quickly became best friends. I learned to know them and gain their affection and respect. These experiences were incredibly rewarding, and I am grateful to have a strong relationship with both host families to this day.

A typical day with the kids looked like this: I would make breakfast and help the baby get ready for daycare. Then, I'd buckle him into his car seat and drop him off.
While he was at daycare, I'd tidy up his room and the playroom, make lunch for the kids, and then head out to pick him up. After that, I'd give him a bath and put him down for a nap.
Once he woke up, I'd prepare his snack, and then we'd play or go to the park until his parents got home.

Activities I did with the kids: playing, reading, playing board games, singing, dancing, making easy recipes, going to the museum, the zoo, the park, and going for walks. We also did crafts and activities to help them learn Spanish.

Responsibilities I had: Taking care of them, establishing routines, preparing meals only for the kids, bathing the baby, changing diapers, doing motor skill exercises, helping with their development, and making sure they took their naps.
