Dear Host Family,
My name is Leslye García, I am 18 years old and I am from Colombia. I am a creative and a patient person, I enjoy taking care of children and traveling. For some time now, I've been part of a community that is preparing me to become an Au Pair. Thanks to them, I've been developing tools and skills that will help me achieve my goal of traveling and living this experience.
My love for children began when I was little, taking care of my younger sister and cousins. However, my more formal experience started in my second-to-last year of school, when a teacher noticed my creativity, patience, and dedication and invited me to join a daily volunteer program with children aged 4 to 6. Since then, I've had the opportunity to care for both infants and older children, including a 9-month-old baby girl, a 5-year-old girl, and a 6-year-old boy, whom I currently work with.
My responsibilities have included changing diapers, preparing their meals, helping them sleep, assisting with schoolwork, and most importantly, entertaining them with meaningful activities. Some of my favorite things to do with children include crafts like painting, coloring, or making figures with various materials; physical games like obstacle races or soccer; simple cooking activities; face painting; and going to the park. I'm currently teaching the baby colors in Spanish and English using brightly colored objects and encouraging good habits like brushing teeth through songs and positive reinforcement. I always aim to make learning fun and age-appropriate.
Thanks to this experience, I've learned to react quickly in challenging situations, but above all, to stay calm. In moments of overwhelming behavior, I like to remain composed, identify the cause, and depending on the child's age, either talk to them or interpret signals to understand their needs. I always validate their emotions, and when necessary, I'm firm but empathetic, using positive reinforcement as an educational tool.
