Chilean au pair looking for an opportunity to learn something new.
Hi!! My name is Tomás and I come originally from Rancagua, a small city in central Chile. I love spending my time doing my hobbies (singing, dancing, cooking, learning languages, playing videogames, etc.), studying, teaching and travelling. I am currently in my last year of a B.Ed. in German as a Foreign Language for Secondary School, and I already have some experience at teaching and dealing with teenagers (and sometimes children).
I love the possibility of getting to know new people and maybe establish some bonds in places I've never imagined before. It'd be nice to know you as well! I'll always be available for a chat about a couple-month stay, where I'd intend to prepare myself as I also give myself a rest before starting my professional life.
I consider myself a very simple and usually calm person, who loves to spend time with his hobbies and work hard to get what (I consider) I deserve. I'm always trying to learn something new, also trying to find new passions, because I think that could take me to something unexpected that could change the course of my life. I like that kind of surprises, but also having everything under control. I also think I am very organised, but that's something that has helped me to deal with so many things, like studying, working and doing extra courses, all at the same time. I always like to find those personal characteristics a good use.
I have a little brother (15y), which I've taken care of my whole life. We have a very nice relationship, even though we're always having small nonsense fights (just like brothers). I've always helped him with school, which actually was one of the reasons I noticed I wanted to be a teacher. We've also done other activities together like cooking, playing, walking around and a long etc. I (as a child/teenager) also taught him how to write, how to walk, how to cook some basic things and other things that are necessary for living. I'd say that has been my longest experience taking care of someone and, of course, something I've learned from a lot.
Currently, I'm living with my boyfriend in Santiago, because we both study there, but none of us really like big cities. We've also been travelling through Chile together as much as we can, visiting friends and family we have along the whole country, but as it's an eternally long country, we haven't even reached the half yet.
I could summarize my hobbies in scenic arts, videogames and nature. I've sung since my childhood, with groups, alone, in festivals, in acts, and it's something I really love and enjoy doing. I also know how to play some instruments, like piano, guitar, bass, xylophone, and a couple others, but I don't consider it to be my strongest point. I just do it for fun.
As I've already mentioned, one thing that really makes me happy is travelling, getting to know new places and also doing some photography (something I've discovered actually pretty recently because I always love to take some kind of souvenir from the places I visit, but I also wanted to start developing my photographing techniques because of that). I like seeing people living their lives in so many different ways, having a near look to their traditions and practicing my languages with them, even if it's in the simplest way possible, like going to buy a coffee or asking for an address to someone on the street.
I always had the opportunity to spend time with my brother and doing everything with him, but as I was the oldest one, I always had to be an example for him. I've spent my whole life taking care of him and my cousin (she's also 15y right now), and because of that some other people in my family started trusting me to take care of their children some days (usually during my holidays or on weekends).
Outside my family, I've never taken care of children, but as I'm a teacher, I tend to deal with them on a daily basis. I usually work with bigger classes (currently I'm teaching a year 8 and 11 in my placement), but I've also observed how smaller children work and behave.
My mother tongue is Spanish, but I grew up bilingual, speaking English with my dad.
I always had interest for languages, so when I was around 4-5 I already started learning Mandarin Chinese with my aunt (I already forgot almost everything, but I still can remember some basic things and characters). That's how I noticed how much I liked languages and passively learnt some of them while I was growing up, like Portuguese or Japanese.
Now, I cannot say I can communicate in all of them, because there are many factors that have some influence (Do I have whom to practice it with? Have I ever been to a country where the language is spoken?, etc.). The last language I decided to master was German, because I started studying a whole career in the language without even knowing anything in it. Luckily I'm managing to do it, and currently I also have a C1 level in German, as well as in English.
I went on a university exchange in Germany (also lived some time in Austria) and that's when I improved my German language skills, but I also took the opportunity to be nearby a lot of countries and also improved my French and Italian mainly.
To be honest, I want to experiment something new, but something I know I can do with the skills I've already acquired in my short 21 years of life. Something that can also bring me a benefit before starting officially working as a teacher, which gives me skills I could've not developed before. I also want to take the opportunity to improve my language skills (preferentially German, but other languages would also be fine) and travel as much as I can, living a relaxed life for once in a long while.
I just expect to have a nice relationship with my host family and to learn a lot from this experience. As otherwise, I expect to be surprised.
