Being an au pair in Australia

In order to work as an au pair in Australia, an au pair must be a national of one of the countries that have a Working Holiday Scheme agreement with Australia (see the section on visas for more information).

• Age: must be age 18-30
• Salary (Pocket money) : On average an au pair can expect to earn between AUD180 - AUD220 per week
• Number of hrs to work and days off: Au pairs in Australia usually work between 20-40 hrs/week and usually get 2 days off per week
• Visas : It is necessary to have a working holiday visa to work as an au pair. See our Visa requirements for Australia page for more information
• Duration of stay: With a working holiday visa, an au pair can work in Australia for up to 12 months
• Language requirements: There are no language requirements for Australia but it is suggested that an au pair have a good understanding of English, the national language of Australia.
• Health Insurance: An au pair is not required to have insurance however, as medical treatment in Australia is expensive, it is advisable that they have both travel and health insurance.
• Travel costs: Travel costs to Australia from the au pairs home country should be covered by the au pair. However, if the host family wants to pay for a part of the costs, it is suggested that they do so after the au pair has stayed with them for at least half of the agreed time.
